Seeds are planted in the soil with the intent that the life inside the seed will find its way out of its husk. Some outer husks of some plants are so tough that simple decay under the soil will not allow the plant to germinate. There are 2 kinds of methods that aid the seed to receive access to air and water: scarification and stratification
Stratification:
If you expose some tough outer seed coats to change of temperatures or humidity over a period of time such as 6-8 weeks, then you are duplicating what nature does for so many of her plants. This seed dormancy is awaiting spring after a long winter and as the temperature rises the germination can begin.
Scarification:
However, there are some seeds that are so tough that stratification does not affect the germination. So a little help is needed. Take a metal file and scrape the outer coat to expose a small portion of the seedling, nik a portion of the coat with a knife, chip off a small portion of the coat with a pliers thus allowing oxygen and moisture to begin the germination process. In nature the guts of some animals add another method of scarification: chemical breakdown of the coat. Hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, and sulfuric acid are sometimes used by botanists to scarify seeds. Forest fires are a huge contributor to scarification.
What do you think?
Do persons on their journey to truth sometimes need spiritual scarification?
Do some of us have a tough outer shell?
In what way does a person exhibit or experience scarification or stratification?
